1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The concept is simple. The rewards are priceless.

Welcome to 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a library program that encourages families and caregivers to read 1,000 books (or more!) with their young children before they begin kindergarten.

Studies show that families who read aloud to their children from birth help strengthen language skills and build vocabulary — two essential tools for when children begin learning to read.

Program Overview

Read any book to your newborn, infant, or toddler! Your goal is to read 1,000 books together before your child enters kindergarten. It goes fast!

If you read just one book a night, you will reach more than 1,000 books after three years.

Making reading part of each day is fun! When you sign up, Meridian Library will send you a logging booklet to use at home and a packet of reward stickers you can reward your child with for reaching goals. A new sticker for every 200 books you read.

Receive a FREE Book Upon Completion!

Once you reach your 1,000-book reading goal, we will be in touch to find out what kind of books you love. Then we will mail you a book picked out especially for you!

How To Participate

  • Sign up here. Start by creating an account for yourself, and then add all children who are participating. Make sure to enter your current mailing address so we can mail your booklet and stickers to get started, and a free book once you complete the program.

  • Read with your child. Studies have shown reading is an excellent bonding opportunity. You will create lifelong memories as you help your child build early literacy skills!.

  • Log your reading. Keep a tally of the books you read together. Make note of which ones your child enjoyed the most. You can do this in your booklet or by logging the books using this website.

  • Don't forget to count the books others read to your child/children — including siblings, teachers, and other family members.
